In between the 10,000 or so other recording projects I’ve had lately, I found time to work on a project that was near and dear to me. Over the years I’ve met and been friends with a number of just flat out incredible songwriters and a lot of their amazing songs and ideas have gotten lost by the “sands of time”. Which is something that makes me incredibly sad. Here I’ve covered (and in some cases rearranged) just a small handful of these songs and released them on my bandcamp for free. Hopefully one of these days I’ll find time to record more! Go here to Download: http://dylangilbert.bandcamp.com/album/songs-my-friends-wrote-ep-vol-1

Wrote and recorded a couple of Top 40 style songs for a Pop Themed party/songwriting competition this past weekend for fun. The results turned out pretty good (and I emerged victorious) so I thought I’d share. For the record I’m not “going pop” haha. You can download the songs here http://drrobeatnik.bandcamp.com

Last week I did some pretty cool stuff. I got invited to perform at Mountain View Elementary School in Hays, NC for all of the Pre-K classes! I played a lot of fun kids songs and two songs that I wrote myself. One was A Trip To The Zoo (which felt totally appropriate) and the other is a new song called Lets Be Friends that I wrote just for the occasion. You can see me perform Lets Be Friends in the video above!!! Also I recorded a version of a 1930s George and Ira Gershwin song called “Oh, Lady Be Good!” and posted it on my band camp for FREEE!

Recorded a film score for this independent film called “Intermediate” which was directed by Nicole Driscoll (who also worked on the “A Trip To The Zoo” music video a while back)! I’ve released the soundtrack for free on bandcamp! Check it out

Things have been heating up in the studio lately. I’ve got a lot of recorded material piling up that I haven’t released yet for one reason or another. So be prepared for a tidal wave of music from me very soon! For example, Hectorina’s first two releases are very very close to being completed. Our Split CD with Bo White is in the mixing process and should be released in the next month or so. Also, our rock opera, COLLYWOBBLE, is only three tracks away from being completed and should be released sometime this summer (hopefully on Vinyl too)! Who knew writing and recording a 22 track rock opera would take so danged long? In other Hectorina news —we’re planning some rock opera themed photo shoots and music videos! Check out a live clip from our most recent show at the milestone HERE!

I’ve also gotten news that the two films who’s scores I worked on over the course of the past year are both nearing completion. When each of those films are released I will also release my musical scores as a free download on my bandcamp page!

Finally, in my spare time I’ve been working on two new solo projects. I guess some people probably think my solo days are over and that’s most certainly not true. Though it did take me some time to figure out what direction I wanted to move into creatively, I am very excited about releasing new material with Hectorina AND as a solo artist and I plan to return to solo performing in the near future too! First I’ll release an “online only” EP called Songs My Friends Wrote which consists of songs by Linus Van Pelt, Allison Weiss, Almighty Flying Machine, Act Like Actors and Phil Pucci (Serfs, Palm Trees, etc.). After that sometime maybe next fall I’ll release a new solo album that takes on a more atmospheric tone. Harking back to my days as a solo performer, a lot of these tracks will consist of vocals and acoustic guitar solely. Maybe something along the lines of this? Hope you’re as excited as I am.

I just recorded an atonal composition I’ve been fiddling with for a while called The Chase. This piece was originally written for a songwriting class I took a while back. Since then I’ve re-worked the piece for synthesizer, organ and piano.

Everyone keeps telling me CDs are dead. I wanna know what everyone else thinks. My new band Hectorina is planning a full length new album that should be released in the next few months and we’re not exactly sure how to release it. Should we…
a) Release our album on CD (also available on iTunes, etc.)
b) Release our album on Vinyl(w/Download Card, also available on iTunes, etc.)
c) Say “screw it” and only release it online/digitally

So I’ve been doing a bunch of work on the SHOWS section of my website (http://www.dylangilbert.com). I added a ton of past shows including stuff that my high school band Something Jed played (hints the picture above hahaha). Maybe I’ll post some of that old junk one day. Anyways, I’ve also got a ton of shows coming up (Solo and with HECTORINA). Be sure to check that out.

Bibis Ellison is amazing!

If you didn’t already know, an amazing singer/songwriter/goddess named Bibis Ellison from Chapel Hill NC has recorded vocals for HECTORINA’s new rock opera. She plays the part of Astrid Cuttlefish. She’s featured on 6 of the album’s 22 tracks. Check out her stuff on bandcamp!

So I’ve linked my Tumblr (which was getting kind of dusty) to my website so that I’ll (hopefully) make more updates here about music, recordings, touring and maybe some fun stuff too. After battling a nasty cold the past week and a half I’m going to be tidying up some guitar tracks in the studio for the EP/Split my new band (HECTORINA) is putting together with Bo White. If you don’t know Bo he’s the musical wizard of the Charlotte music scene. He plays with Yardwork too.
